Biography

Oliver Goldsmith

Oliver Goldsmith (1728 – 1774) was an Anglo-Irish writer most famous for The Vicar of Wakefield published in 1766 and the comic drama She Stoops to Conquer (1771). His poems were published in The Poems and Plays of Oliver Goldsmith (Frederick Warne and Co., 1889) and include the 160-line romantic ballad ‘The Hermit’ (which turns up in The Vicar of Wakefield when it’s sung by one of the characters).
